Cosgarne Hall Ltd. At the beginning of January 2009, almost 10 years after acquiring Cosgarne Hall, John Coventry formally handed over the Accommodation side of the Service to Cosgarne Hall Ltd., which now manages the buildings and provides accommodation to the residents. John and his support team continue to provide Housing-Related Support to the residents of Cosgarne Hall and Greenaway House on behalf of Cosgarne Hall Ltd., on the same basis as before, under the terms of a Supporting People contract with Cornwall Council. Cosgarne Hall Ltd. was formed as a Voluntary Organisation (a Company Limited by Guarantee) and is intended to be a partnership between the Residents, Staff and Local Community. On 1st. September 2009 it became a Registered Charity. The Directors / Trustees are: Cllr. Sandra Heyward JP (Chair) – Sandra is well-known in the local community, having lived nearby for more than 25 years. She represented the local Ward on Restormel Borough Council from 2003 to 2007 and is now a member of the St. Austell Town Council and Deputy Mayor. Sandra has been a staunch supporter of our work for many years and is our link with the Local Community, where she is a trustee of another local charity providing a centre for a number of activities for the blind and elderly, as well as a number of community groups. She is also a Magistrate and so provides a link with Criminal Justice, which is particularly relevant to a number of our Clients. Ian McDonald BA – now retired, Ian enjoyed a long and successful career in education, having been headmaster of two local schools before becoming an educational administrator. Following a partnership breakdown, sadly Ian succumbed to the effects of alcoholism and this led him eventually to Cosgarne Hall. After leaving Cosgarne Hall, he successfully re-integrated himself into the community, pursuing a new career as a Counsellor. He joined the Board as part of a desire to give something back to the organisation that helped him to put his life back on track and now runs our alcohol counselling service in a voluntary capacity. His administrative skills acquired during his career in education are a valuable asset to the Board. Dr. Heidi Burke MB BS – Heidi is a very experienced GP, working with Cornwall Health for Homeless, a service run by the NHS to provide health care for single homeless people who may otherwise not prioritise their health, or register with a GP. They deal with mental health problems and addictions, as well as regular health issues. Heidi is very familiar with our client group and has been an enthusiastic and very much "hands-on" supporter of Cosgarne for several years, leading a group of volunteers who work with ouur residents, enhancing their lives and environment. Cosgarne Hall Ltd. (CHL) was formed primarily for the purpose of continuing the existing provision of accommodation for single homeless people with support needs and to secure the long term future of the service by accessing funding streams not available to private sector landlords. It objectives, however, are wider ranging: to relieve need, hardship and distress of vulnerable, single, homeless people in Cornwall, in particular but not exclusively by providing or assisting in the provision of accommodation and such other support as the Directors may from time to time determine. CHL will continue to provide an alcohol tolerant service, with the aim of helping drinkers to address the problems and dependencies caused by the misuse of alcohol and other substances, by putting a roof over their heads first; and then providing support, encouragement and counselling, to enable them to engage successfully with appropriate programmes and services, in order to tackle their dependency.
